Being eco-friendly has become the new black. Everyone seems to love it. And we love how terms like eco-friendly, organic, 100% natural, zero-waste are becoming a topic of discussion in our everyday lives. It’s surely a significant milestone in the long journey of sustainability.
However, it can be complicated and overwhelming when you’re just starting out. So we are here with 5 simple steps to become more eco-friendly and to get you started on your sustainability journey —
1. Ask yourself why you’re doing it
Do not force or pressurize yourself into becoming more eco-friendly or do something because it feels trendy. Instead, read more about how we are impacting our environment and why should we become more cautious about our behavior towards it. You will only be able to do something if you genuinely feel about it.
2. Small changes are better than none
It’s 100 percent okay if you cannot take big steps. The journey to being sustainable is a rather long one. Take baby steps, start with one or two changes at a time. For example, start collecting and reusing rainwater at home, lower your energy consumption, start buying secondhand products, etc. Trust us, they are better than not doing anything at all. And you already know what we say: “We don’t need one big change; we need a million small changes.”

3. Focus on building habits
Sustainability is a lifestyle. You cannot possibly become more eco-friendly just by buying products that read organic on their labels. Build small habits, connect with your surroundings in as little and as many ways as possible. Start with, for example, by watering the plants in your home yourself twice a week, then slowly increase the frequency. Once you find a connect and enjoy doing it, you are more likely to build a kitchen garden than say trying to build one right away. Small things lead to big changes.
4. Remember to take it slow, don’t overwhelm yourself
It’s impossible to build habits, change your lifestyle completely and become “eco-friendly” in a day or even in a few days. That would be so utopian. In reality, it can take a few years to actually adapt yourself and become truly sustainable. So do not rush into it and do not worry about not doing enough. Take your time and everything will fall into place.
5. Share your progress
Sharing always make things better be it food (when it belongs to someone else, of course, jk!) or emotions or anything in between. It’s super helpful to keep sharing your progress with everyone, it keeps you going and can also inspire others when they see how happy you are with your choices. Although, remember not to brag. The only way we can truly become sustainable is by doing it together. It’s not a competition about who is more eco-friendly or less.
